A: All admitted students receive a five-year financial package that provides a stipend and pays tuition. The first-year fellowship pays tuition and currently provides a stipend of $30,780 for twelve months.

A: The application code for the History department is H20PH.
Q: What is your "institution code"?
A: The institutional code number for reporting GRE scores to Northwestern's Graduate School is 1565. There is no separate code for the History department.

A: The Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C. was built in 1903 and served as a public library until 1972. The building then sat unused until 1999, when the DC History Center was granted a lease to open and operate an urban history museum.


Q: What is the TOEFL or IELTS requirement for foreign applicants?

There are two possible problems: 1) you are trying to apply for an inappropriate quarter (we only admit for the Fall), or 2) if you know that the quarter you are trying to select is appropriate, you may be using an outdated application. You will need to start a new online application (set up a new account).
Q: What if I am having trouble uploading application documents (or other application issues)?
A: Submit your online application and pay the fee. Then you can access your uploader. If you are still unable to upload your documents, contact the CAS Office of Graduate Admissions.
Q: How do I upload a transcript to the online application so it is the right size?
A: 1. Scan your transcript at a maximum resolution of 300dpi for black and white documents and 200dpi for color documents.

2. Be sure to scan and upload both sides of the transcript.
Q: What happens if my letters or test scores arrive after the December 1 deadline?
A: You should submit your letters and test scores by December 1 in order to guarantee that they will be considered by the faculty during the admissions process.

A: The average GPA for our admitted students is 3.71 for undergraduates and 3.87 for graduates.

A: You should always consult with your advisor before adding or dropping a class. Adding a class your advisor hasn't approved of can delay your graduation, and dropping a class can hurt your financial aid, scholarship eligibility, athletic eligibility, immigration status, or insurance coverage.
Q: What math should I take?
A: Entering freshmen should take the on-line math placement test and then carefully watch prerequisites when choosing their math, statistics or logic classes.
Q: How long should I plan for my visit to the museum?
A: It depends on what you want to see and how long you want to spend at each exhibit.


Q: How do I apply for financial assistance?
A: The regular application is the application for financial aid.
Q: How do my recommenders submit letters on my behalf?
A: Letters of recommendation must be submitted online.
Q: Who should write my letters of recommendation?
A: You should have at least one academic reference, but two is preferred. If you don't have two academic references, you can use a reference from work or an internship.

A: Email if you think you should get a fee waiver.

Q: Where can I find out more about your graduate program?
A: This website contains information about Northwestern's PhD program in English. The program offers interdisciplinary strengths, degree requirements, a scholarly environment, and recent graduate awards and placements.
Q: When do AP® US History scores typically come out?
A: The 2023 AP® US History exam is on Fri, May 5, 2023, at 8am local time. It will be offered as a traditional paper-and-pencil test or as an in-school digital exam on computers. Scores will be released in July 2023.
