A: If you are eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and you are enrolled in an online course, you will receive a percentage of the tuition and fees for the course. The percentage you receive is based on the number of credits you are taking and whether or not you are enrolled in a degree-seeking program.

A: To figure out your countable income, you'll need to show the VA how you got your total. This worksheet can help. Assisted living costs can be deducted from your countable expenses. If your parents have already been approved for A&A, the VA will count the net proceeds from the sale of their home as assets unless they spend down that money within the same calendar year that they sell their home.

Q: How Is Wartime Service Defined?

A: The VA Aid and Attendance pension benefit provides a monthly payment to veterans and surviving spouses who need daily assistance at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home. To be eligible, veterans must have served on active duty for at least 90 consecutive days, including at least one day during wartime. Widowed spouses of eligible veterans may also qualify if they meet the clinical and income requirements and have not remarried.

A: If you are a GI Bill® recipient, you will need to verify your enrollment with VA at the end of every month.

A: You can receive a 100% refund for each class until the 100% refund period ends. After that, you can receive a refund for each class that has not yet started. You cannot receive a refund for a class that has already started.

Q: How can my full-time status vary throughout the semester?

A: If you are taking a combination of full-term and shorter classes, VA will calculate your status for each "term" using VA math. If you are taking one class that lasts the whole semester and one that only lasts 8 weeks, when the shorter class ends, you might fall below full-time.

A: You will not need to submit a transcript from your current institution if you have not attended any other institution.

A: Synchronous courses require students to login to Blackboard Collaborate or Zoom at a specific time, while asynchronous courses allow students to complete activities at their own time.

A: The A&A pension benefit is available for qualified veterans and surviving spouses who are “substantially confined to your immediate premises because of permanent disability.” For example, a veteran who needs care at home because he only leaves the house to go to doctor appointments and physical therapy could be eligible for Housebound benefits.

You may have to repay VA for dropped courses or classes that you stop attending. Please contact the Veteran Services Office prior to dropping a course.

Q: How does a change in my enrollment impact my VA Educational Benefits?

A: If you are receiving VA benefits, you must report any changes in your schedule to the Military and Veterans Success Center. If you do not report changes, you may have to repay the VA.

A: Make an appointment with your academic advisor to discuss your registration for the upcoming semester. This will ensure that you are prepared to register for classes when priority registration opens.

Q: Why is my Monthly Housing Allowance (Post 9/11 GI Bill® only) so much less if I am taking online classes?

A: The Post 9/11 GI Bill® pays a different rate for students who are enrolled entirely online. The rate is ½ of the national average. Unfortunately, students who are taking a combination of on-campus (resident) and online (distance) classes sometimes also get caught by this requirement if they are only attending online classes for a portion of the semester. Hybrid classes count as resident classes.

Q: Why do I keep getting emails saying that the school has amended my certification?

A: If you've added or dropped a class, you will need to submit a new CRF to notify our office of the changes. If none of those apply, it is probably just a notification that we have completed your Dual Certification.

Q: Why haven’t I received my monthly payment?

A: If you submitted your CRF before the deadline, and you are still in school, you may need to do your monthly self-verification.

Q: Why is my monthly payment less than the full amount?

A: If the semester is less than 30 days, VA will pay you based on the number of days in the semester.

Q: Why haven't I been certified yet?

A: You must notify your VA Rep that you plan to attend the upcoming term, and make sure you have your class schedule set before you request to be certified. Changes in enrollment may impact or delay your eligibility.
