Q: What is Cross Country?
A: Cross country is long distance running over different types of terrain, including grass, dirt, sand, concrete, and asphalt. The race may include hills, valleys, roads, sidewalks, and trails, and is run rain or shine.
Q: What can be learned from Cross Country?
A: Cross country running can help your student-athlete develop positive mental and physical attributes, including confidence, endurance, and perseverance. In addition, they will form friendships with teammates and runners from other schools that can continue beyond high school. Because of these acquired personal characteristics, listing Cross Country on a college application as an extra-curricular activity can only be an “eye-catching” enhancement.

A: The average cross country race is 3 miles long.

A: The race distances for the 8 & Under divisions are 2000m for both boys and girls. For the 9-10 division, the race distance is 3000m for both boys and girls. For the 11-12 division, the race distance is 3000m for both boys and girls. For the 13-14 division, the race distance is 4000m for both boys and girls. For the 15-18 division, the race distance is 5000m for both boys and girls.

PRACTICES, TEAM SELECTION, AND RACES?.

Q: When are the practices?
A: Practice sessions are scheduled during 6th period of school and may roll over to afterschool. Most practices are 2-2.5 hours. Practice days may include school holidays.
Q: How are the varsity teams selected?
A: The fastest 7 runners on the team (regardless of grade) make the Varsity teams. You need 7 runners on the Varsity squad, and at least five to score as a team. However, the athlete’s work ethic, as well as the dedication, and commitment they may display is also considered. Ultimately, the coaches have the final say as to who runs Varsity for the next competition.
Q: When are the races?
A: The season covers September through the first part of November. Advancement beyond the league is completed by the end of November. League meets are typically on Thursday afternoons. We also compete at Invitational Races on most Saturdays against many other schools throughout California.

A: Cross country running is a sport in which athletes run long distances over rough terrain. It is one of the most physically demanding sports, and requires a high level of fitness.

GET INVOLVED WITH RACING AND FIND RESOURCES.

Q: How can I help before the season starts ?
A: We strongly encourage all of our runners to run all during the summer. Some senior members of the team will attend a high altitude training camp during the summer to improve on fitness for the upcoming season.

A: 1. Find the start and finish lines when you arrive.
2. Choose a spot to watch the race from.
3. Move around to different points along the course to cheer on the runners.
4. Do not hand out food or water to runners during the race.

RACE DAY EXPECTATIONS AND SCHEDULE.

A: Athletes are expected to be loyal to the team, themselves, and coaches. There is an expectation of daily practice with the team because “success” is achieved only when they show up and run as a team. As each individual runner improves, so does the team. They are expected to do workouts to the best of their ability. They are expected to listen to coaches and captains, and be open minded to suggestions and advice. A: Eat small portions of easily digested foods 3 hours before competition, drink lots of water, and avoid sugary, fatty, or filling foods.

A: Do not expect your child to be able to focus on you before a race. Allow them to warm up, be briefed by coaches, and prepare mentally and physically for the race with their teammates. Do not take them out of the chute after the race. Let the coaches handle post-race recovery. There may be some disappointment after the race, but athletes will come to you when they are ready to talk.

A: We recommend that you run 5 days a week for 15-30 minutes a day, with 2 of those days being the practice days we meet.

A: The RUHS Cross Country Team competes in the prestigious Bay League against some of the top-ranked teams in the state. They are a Southern Section, Division II School.
